Summer hiatus
The blog will be on a mini hiatus this summer until July/August. I’ll be doing some traveling so I will not have time to update the blog as often.
Thank you to all my reader. Stay tuned for more… but for now, hope everyone enjoys summertime with friends and family.

What can pharmacists do?
One of my followers recently asked me a question about different fields within pharmacy. After all, pharmacy schools keep saying that a Pharm.D. degree is very versatile, but what exactly can you do with it?
Community pharmacist - you are the most accessible healthcare professional, especially in rural areas or if a patient cannot afford medical visits. Community pharmacists do not get enough...

Passing the Pharmacy Tech Test →
theangrypharmacy:
Now, I live in Texas, but I do assume that all the pharm tech tests in other states are the same, if not at least highly similar. I studied for a day and passed it easily. If you’re not the time to cram, then really do take time to study it.
1. I see a lot of study guides that make you study the…

Take pictures of anything pharmacy-related
Reference geeky pharmacy jokes with friends
See the sunrise… because of studying all night
Think everything in life is going to collapse because of the overwhelming amount of material on exams
Use up all my printing money for endless lecture slides

WHY WE SUCCEED AT REPEATING FAILURES BUT FAIL AT... →
healthdemystified:
Hey there,
Doesn’t it bother you that certain people just don’t learn? They keep doing the same things over and over even though clearly their method doesn’t work!
Obviously this doesn’t apply to you. I’m talking about those other idiots in your life!
Maybe, you’ve found yourself in an equally upsetting situation where you’ve achieved success, but then you can’t recreate...

One of the pledges of the Obama administration’s healthcare overhaul was to enable cheaper copies of expensive biotech drugs, but the savings may not be as deep or come as quickly as hoped.

Pharmacy Relationship Analogy
I am enrolled in a 6-year pharmacy program. One of my professors, Dr. V, offered us a humorous analogy about pharmacy school:
The first two pre-professional years are the beginning of your relationship. You flirt with the idea of trying out other subjects; you’re not sure you want to commit pharmacy yet; you’re interested but just testing out the waters.
After the first two years,...

I get too attached →
christinefi:
Mr. P passed away yesterday. I suppose you could say I’m irrationally upset over it, considering I’ve never actually been able to speak with him and know nothing about him (save for “medical history”). But for some reason, he’s one of the patients that will leave the biggest impact on me, well after my rotation is over. Maybe it’s the fact that he was the last patient to pass away...

Pharmacy Informatics News: Study implants chip... →
…Thursday’s study is believed the first attempt at using a wirelessly controlled drug chip in people. If this early-stage testing eventually pans out, the idea is that doctors one day might program dose changes from afar with the push of a button… In the study, the microchip held doses of that…

What my exam schedule looks like
Last year, at this time, I was juggling to study for organic chemistry and systems physiology exams. I didn’t know how to study, what I was doing, and the thought of studying nearly gave me a panic attack. Studying often made me feel dejected, overwhelmed, and inadequate. Fast forward one year, I am bombarded with even more exams, but they have become part of my weekly routine. I guess, you...
Making a difference... →
jackieonawhim:
This is the reason I love pharmacy and why I put myself through school. The power of pharmacy is the ability to create a positive difference, a meaningful impact on someone’s life - no matter how small it may seem.

I knew this rotation wasn’t going to be easy, but I don’t think I was expecting it to be this hard, either. And I’m not talking about the workload. I’m talking about going into work every day, not knowing if all of the patients you cared for the day before will still be there. Seeing them hooked up to ventilators, with no semblance of autonomy, just awaiting the family’s decision on...

First Impressions of Spring Semester
At the beginning of last semester, I wrote down my first impressions of classes; then at the end of the semester, I reflected upon them. It’s interesting to see how my perspective evolved. So here are my first impressions of spring semester!

Pregnant and on Drugs
Did you know that many drugs available on the market today have not been clinically tested on women? What impact does that have on women taking over-the-counter or prescription drugs? Should clinical trials include more women and what are the risks and benefits? How should “child-bearing potential” be considered?
Join our panel of experts who will discuss the issues of including pregnant women...

A fascinating short article from NPR - ahem, Nolan - on the possibility of using Ketamine (colloquially known as “Special K”) to provide quicker relief for symptoms of depression. It discusses something I’ve heard before - that maybe the field of psychiatric pharmacy is changing.
In case you didn’t know, I’m heavily considering going into psychiatric pharmacy once I graduate from...
